Pathogenesis of Type 2 Diabetes in Korean

Dr. Park is a professor of Internal Medicine, Seoul National University College of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Seoul National University College of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine and clinical fellowship in division of endocrinology and metabolism at Seoul National University Hospital. Dr. Park has been at Seoul National University for most of his career where he was professor of Internal Medicine since 1992. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at UCSD from 1995 to 1997. He served as head of the division of endocrinology and metabolism from 2006 to 2012. Dr. Park has both clinical and research interests in diabetes mellitus. His main research interest are genetics and pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus in East Asian population and the molecular mechanisms underlying unique clinical and metabolic phenotypes in this population. He served as a director of 'Genome Research Center for Diabetes and Endocrine Disease' from 2000-2011. He has been active in professional societies and hospital committees and has served as editorial board of many international journals. He served as chairman of board of directors of Korean Society of Lipidology and Atherosclerosis, vice President of Korean Endocrine Society and president of Korean Genome Organization. Currently he is chairman of board of directors of Korean Diabetes Association and also president of Biomedical Research Institute, Seoul National University Hospital. He has received many awards such as SNUH best research awards, Namkok award from Korean Endocrine Society(2008), Best research award from Ministry of Health and Welfare(2009), Sulwon award from Korean Diabetes Association(2009), Hamchun Dong-A award(2012), Wunsch Medical Award(2016) and Order of Science and Technology Merit(2017). He published more than 350 papers in the field of diabetes and metabolism in peer reviewed journals including Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Nature, Nature Genetics, Am J Human Genetics, Science Signaling, Diabetes etc.
