Collaboration between basic researchers and clinicians: A surgeon's perspectives

Dr. Kim is a professor of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Seoul National University College of Medicine. After received his medical degree from Seoul National University College of Medicine and residency training in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at Seoul National University Hospital, he was trained as a clinical fellow of Advanced General Thoracic Surgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Since he was appointed as a lecturer in 1996, he spent most of his academic career at Seoul National University. He served as chairman of the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery from 2012 to 2020; and served as a director of the Lung Cancer Center, Seoul National University Cancer Hospital. In academic society, he is serving as a chairman of the Korean Association for Lung Cancer, the Korean Cancer Association board. Internationally, he works as an associated editor for the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, Disease of the Esophagus, and Innovation. He received Dr. C. Lillehei Merit Award for Excellence in Clinical Research and the Johnson & Johnson Medical Award, Korean Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Being interested in clinical and basic researches of thoracic malignancies, he published more than 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Cell, Nature Genetics, Genomic Research, Cancer Immunology Research, Journal of Thoracic Oncology, and Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
