Research Ethics Symposium

Considering the impact of recent scientific achievements and new technology in life science that is rapidly growing, in our life, the moral and ethical aspects of science become an important issue to affect our society. This symposium focuses on research integrity and responsibility by Professor Eun Seong Hwang (University of Seoul) and Journalist Eun Jeong Lee (KBS).

Writing sciencepapers in right ways

In recent years, international exposure and citations of Korean academic journals and papers are increasing rapidly. It is a very desirable phenomenon, but accompanying this, the
insufficiency in research integrity that may be present in our papers is easily revealed and can be criticized in even broader audience. Inadequacies in data processing, authorship, and text
writing are representative problems that can devalue our research results. In this lecture, I would limit my talk to the problems of poor adequacy and confidence in thesis writing,
which are not easily improved among us, and present ethical attitudes and tips necessary for writing correct and good scientific papers.

Scientists and research ethics in the Korean media

After the scandal of stem cell in 2005, Korean media spotlighted the cases of violations of research ethics. It was mainly targeted at violations of research ethics related to manipulating papers. Online scientists' community like BRIC and research ethics committees of each universities and research institutes became an important source. There were many cases journalists got reports of violating research ethics by whistleblowers.
Bioethics is in a different category compared to research ethics. However, violations of bioethics is often related to research ethics in bioscience study. A representative case is Dr. He Jiankui applied CRISPER gene-editing technique to human embryos.
In recent years, many cases have been reported in the media such as giving the authorship to their children. Also, the media reported that the scientists used national research funds privately.
The violation of research could be explained by the fallacy of slippery slope. It started from trivial cheating but finally leads to a serious crime.
