What is the gold standard model for new drug discovery and development?

Chul Kyu Lee, Ph. D.
Headquarters of new drug development support, Chemon, Korea

New drug development can be said to be like the process of refining a rough tone to make a brilliant gemstone. As there are many different methods of obtaining rough tones, there are also differences in efficiency. However, the subsequent process, that is, the process of refining the rough stone is a much higher-value process. The new drug development also starts with finding the rough tone. That is, after first deriving a candidate substance, it goes through a high-value process, lead optimization process for the selected candidate substance. Numerous evaluation methods are used in this process, and the method must be a ‘gold standard method’. In this way, errors in the interpretation of the results can be minimized. Chemon has accumulated historical data while conducting various validity evaluations for the past 20 years, and has an SOP for each evaluation model based on this. The author would like to briefly introduce some of the ‘gold standard methods’ used for efficacy evaluation today: stroke model in CV, dementia model in CNS, humanized model in Cancer, and NASH model in metabolic disease.
