Ȳö»ó (Æ÷½ºÅØ(POSTECH) »ý¸í°úÇаú) Dr. Cheol-Sang Hwang received his Ph.D. from Seoul National University (SNU) in 2000. After completing his postdoctoral training at SNU and California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), he joined POSTECH as an assistant professor in 2011. Dr. Hwang is one of the leading scientists in the field of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, with an emphasis on N-end rule pathways of protein degradation. In 2010, Dr. Hwang at CALTECH made a truly major discovery of a specific proteolytic function of enigmatic N-terminal acetylation (Nt-acetylation) of cellular proteins (Science). His work was the first demonstration of Nt-acetylation as a specific protein degradation signal, and its associated N-end rule pathway (the Ac/N-end rule pathway). Dr. Hwang's independent work, since his move to POSTECH, continued to be first-rate. In particular, his lab's publication in Cell (2014) elucidated the role of unacetylated N-terminal Met residue of cellular proteins as another specific (new) degradation signal, and another publication in Science (2015) demonstrated the universal presence of the Ac/N-end rule pathway, a proteolytic system that Dr. Hwang originally discovered and analyzed in 2010. Dr. Hwang path-breaking studies and original discoveries concerning the Ac/N-end rule pathway also revealed its physiological functions in the protein quality control (Mol Cell, 2013), G-protein signaling and blood pressure (Science, 2015), circadian rhythm (J Biol Chem, 2016) and lipid droplet biogenesis (J Biol Chem, in revision). Most recently, Dr. Hwang's lab also discovered that formyl-methionine-containing proteins can be not only produced in the cytosol of eukaryotic cells but also degraded by a newly identified fMet/N-end rule pathway (Science, revised). Dr. Hwang's research papers have been highly recognized in the field, and many of them are ground-breaking ones, and were published in one of world's top academic journals such as Science and Cell. Furthermore, he also received many prestigious scientific awards including The Scientist of This Month Award (2014), Postechian Award (2015), and The Top 100 Achievements of Research and Development (2014).
