Jae Ung Jung, Ph.D. (Harvard Medical School, USA)
Dr. Jung is the first Korean basic scientist who has received a tenured Professorship at Harvard Medical School. He is currently a Professor of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School, a chairman of the Tumor Virology Division at New England Primate Research Center, and also a chairman of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at University of Southern California Keck Medical School. He also holds academic appointments at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Jung serves on a large number of reviews and advisory panels including the scientific committee for the Minister of Science and Technology of Korea.
Dr. Jung received his bachelor and master degrees in the food science department at Seoul National University in Korea (1984) and his doctorate in the microbiology department from the University of California at Davis (1989). He carried out postdoctoral research in the department of microbiology and molecular genetics at the New England Primate Research Center at Harvard Medical School (1992).
Dr. Jung is regarded as a leading expert in the molecular biology of gamma-herpesviruses and their gene products as they relate to cell biology, biochemistry, and immunology.
He has made a number of seminal observations, most notably regarding the biochemistry and cell biology of oncoproteins encoded by gamma-herpesviruses.
His current research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of virus-induced diseases, especially those related to gamma-2 herpesviruses such as Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, murine herpesvirus 68, rhesus rhadinovirus, herpesvirus saimiri. These viruses are interesting research targets because they contain a number of cellular homologs that may aid the escape from host immunity and the progression of disease.
Dr. Jung and his wife Byeonglan Jung have two children, Seojin and Doojin. They reside in Southborough, Massachusetts. |
