Dr. Augustine M. K. Choi is currently the Distinguished Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He received his MD from the University of Louisville School of Medicine (AOA) in 1984. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine in 1987 at the Duke University Medical Center. He then pursued his Pulmonary Fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1987 1990, followed by a 3 year Visiting Scholar tenure at the National Institutes of Health from 1990-1993. Dr. Choi was on the full time faculty within the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1990-1998 and in the Section of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine atYale University School of Medicine from 1998-2000. Dr. Choi served as Chief, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh from 2000 to 2007.
Dr. Choi moved to Harvard Medical School in 2007. Dr. Choi has a longstanding commitment to the training of postdoctoral fellows, and physician-scientists in lung diseases. Dr. Choi's passion for mentoring and successful career development of fellows and faculty represents his major mission in academic medicine. Dr. Choi has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed manuscripts in addition to 50 review articles, 16 book chapters, and many other scholarly writings. He serves as the Associate Editor of American Journal of Respiratory Cellular and Molecular Biology and as editorialboard members of numerous journals. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians. Dr. Choi is currently funded by 4 NIH RO1 grants, 1 NIH R03 grant, and is the Principal Investigator of a T32 Training Grant.
Dr. Choi's research interest has focused on the regulation and function of stress response genes in response to oxidative stress and inflammation. He has extensively examined the molecular regulation/signaling pathways and function of anti-oxidant enzymes, in particular heme oxygenase-1 and gaseous molecule carbon monoxide, in variety of in vitro and in vivo models of lung and vasculardiseases. Dr. Choi is currently planning to examine whether inhaled carbon monoxide can be an effective therapy in human disease. Dr. Choi also has interest in genomic approaches in identifying candidates genes important in the pathogenesis of lung diseases, in particular ARDS/sepsis and emphysema. His laboratory has also recently focused on the role of autophagy in acute and chronic lung diseases.
He is married to Dr. Mary E. Choi, Associate Professor of Medicine in Nephrology at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital. They have two sons Justin JinWoong and Alex JinSung. His father, Dr. Young Soo Choi, is a graduate of Seoul National University Medical College in 1951.
